Our Lord gave us advice on what to do when people do not get it. We should bless and pray for them (Matthew 5:44), and shake the dust off our feet and keep moving forward (Matthew 10:14). We should not let them stop us from sharing our truth with people who are ready to receive and hear what we have to share with them.
People will not be ready to receive and hear what we have to share about God’s truth because they are not yet ready to change, or simply have made up their mind to do things their way rather than listen and hear what the Holy Spirit is speaking to our spirit. God’s Word has been given to us in the Scriptures, which is God’s true and eternal Word that can never fade or have one word taken away from it (Matthew 24:35). God can never lie (Numbers 23:19; Titus 1:2).
People will also not be willing to hear the true Word of God, or they badly mistake or misinterpret it because of fear of the unknown, and so they have not yet experienced the peace, joy, and contentment that comes from knowing that Christ lives in us (Colossians 1:27). In His Spirit we are already victorious, because Christ has already given us victory over the world (1 John 5:4).
Our Lord Jesus told us that He has already defeated the world and Satan on the cross when He died for our sins (John 16:33; Colossians 2:15). All our sins are forgiven, and He was raised from the dead for our justification (Romans 4:25). “We have been crucified with Christ, and no longer live, but the life we live in the body we live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave Himself for us” (Galatians 2:20).
As it is written: “Who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?” (Isaiah 53:1).
We are just sowers of God’s Word into people’s minds. Our job is not to convert, convince, or change anyone, but to plant the seed (Matthew 13:3–9). Our Heavenly Father, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is the one who opens the heart of everyone who believes in the Son and receives eternal life (Acts 16:14; John 3:16). He is the one who makes the seed grow (1 Corinthians 3:6–7). He is also like a gardener who prunes the branches in the vine to make them bear more fruit (John 15:1–2).
So we should not let those who do not want to accept the truth of Scripture discourage us, or make us angry, frustrated, or impatient. When their circumstances change, they may be willing to receive or hear what we want to share with them.
We should be kind in our actions and tender hearted in our attitudes towards those who doubt and do not believe (Ephesians 4:32). We should be gentle and loving towards them, always ready to give reasons for our trust and faith in God when we are asked (1 Peter 3:15). But we do so by speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15), and by being respectful and kind to them when we explain or give reasons for our faith in God and our belief in Jesus our Lord and Saviour, in whom we have eternal life (John 17:3).
