“God looks at the heart, while humans look at outward appearances.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

Is our heart full of integrity and uprightness? Are we walking in humility of heart with a humble and contrite spirit before God? As it is written, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.” (Psalm 51:17).

David was chosen and anointed king to replace Saul, who became proud and rebellious against God's commands and sought his own glory rather than God's. God chose David over Saul because of his humble heart. Though David committed many sins against God, he was sincere in repentance and quick to turn back to the Lord. God saw his heart and declared him to be “a man after His own heart” (Acts 13:22; 1 Samuel 13:14).

In the same way, we should imitate our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who, though equal with God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped for His own advantage. Instead, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even death on a cross (Philippians 2:5–8). Therefore, God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father (Philippians 2:9–11).

We should examine our hearts to see whether we are walking in integrity and uprightness, rather than being concerned merely with money, status, or outward appearances. In what ways are we humbling ourselves under God's mighty hand? (1 Peter 5:6). Are we persevering through troubles and afflictions? Are we allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us in God's ways of truth and love? Are integrity and uprightness guiding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus?

We pray that God's integrity and uprightness will lead and guide all our steps as we submit to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. May we put our complete trust in God and His unfailing Word and promises. May we rejoice in our afflictions (Romans 5:3–5), pray without ceasing, and give thanks in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18), regardless of uncertainty, opposition, or persecution that comes our way.

May we keep our eyes fixed on our Lord Jesus Christ, who lives in us (Galatians 2:20) and is our ever-present help in times of trouble (Psalm 46:1).
