"Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." — Psalm 73:26
David declared, "Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Psalm 73:26).
He continually put his trust in God.
Despite David's many sins, including his adultery with Bathsheba, God described him as "a man after My own heart" because his heart continually turned back to God in repentance, faith, and obedience (Acts 13:22; 2 Samuel 11–12; Psalm 51).
In his heart, soul, and innermost being, David believed in God. Throughout the Psalms, he revealed the kind of trust and confidence that every believer should have—not trusting in ourselves, drawing strength from mortal men, or putting confidence in human abilities, but placing our complete trust in God to deliver us, redeem our souls, and save us.
David's focus was entirely on God. He drew his strength from the Lord alone, believing that God is able to do far above all that we ask or imagine according to His power at work within us (Ephesians 3:20).
Even when his heart and flesh failed, God remained the strength of his heart and his portion forever. David trusted God completely as his Protector, Provider, Salvation, Refuge, Strength, Defence, and Deliverer.
As God's chosen children, we are also called to trust Him completely, no matter the troubles, afflictions, temptations, pain, suffering, or overwhelming difficulties we face. Even when we feel lost, discouraged, or weak, God remains the strength of our hearts and our portion forever (Psalm 46:1; Isaiah 41:10).
Like David, may we continue to trust in God's unfailing compassion and mercy, for "His steadfast love never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning" (Lamentations 3:22–23). We can also trust in His Word, knowing that it will never fail. Every promise God has spoken will come to pass, for "not one word has failed of all His good promise" (1 Kings 8:56; Isaiah 55:11).
God cares for us and loves us unconditionally. Nothing can separate us from the love that God has for us in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:35–39). Therefore, in the midst of every trial, opposition, persecution, and the increasing wickedness around us, we can boldly declare:
"If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31).
Let us therefore, in quietness and complete trust, find our strength in the Lord, knowing that He is our portion forever. As the hymn beautifully declares:
"On the mountain and in the valley,
On the land and in the sea,
The Lord is our portion,
Now and forevermore."
May we always say with confidence:
"Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides You. Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." — Psalm 73:25–26
