"Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." – Ephesians 4:29 (NIV)

Words are powerful. With just a sentence, we can lift someone up—or unintentionally bring them down. In our everyday conversations, especially in difficult moments, the Bible calls us to choose our words carefully and to speak life.

The Power of Our Words

The words we speak have the ability to heal, encourage, and restore. On the other hand, negative or careless words can leave lasting scars—wounds that take years to heal, if at all. Scripture vividly describes the tongue as a small flame that can set a forest ablaze (James 3:5-6). That image reminds us of just how potent our speech can be, for good or for harm.

A Call to Speak Graciously

We are not called to silence, but to intentional speech—words that carry grace, truth, and love. Proverbs 16:24 says:

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. ”Words of kindness, spoken at the right time, have the power to calm anxiety, ease burdens, and lift hearts.

“Anxiety weighs down the heart, but a kind word cheers it up.” – Proverbs 12:25Let us be people who choose words that encourage, not discourage—words that point others to hope, not despair.

Guarding Our Tongue

It’s easy to speak rashly when we’re tired, frustrated, or wounded. But we are urged to be watchful and wise. The Bible repeatedly reminds us to put a guard over our mouths (Psalm 141:3), and to speak only what builds others up in faith.

Today, let’s commit to being intentional in our speech. Let’s speak words that align with God’s heart—words that bring healing, inspire faith, and restore brokenness.

A Prayer of Surrender

Heavenly Father,

We come before You, asking for forgiveness for the times we’ve spoken words that were harsh, careless, or damaging. We confess that in our pain or impatience, we have sometimes torn others down instead of building them up.

Help us, Lord, to guard our tongues and speak words filled with Your love, truth, and grace. May the words that proceed from our mouths be pleasing in Your sight—bringing encouragement, healing, and restoration to those around us.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Let today be a turning point—a moment to choose life-giving words, inspired by the Spirit, to bless, not break… to build, not tear down.
