My heart is not proud, nor is my heart greedy. I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me to understand, but like a weaned child, I calm and still myself before You, and like a weaned child, I am content (Psalm 131:1–2).

Our Saviour’s word to us is that unless we become like little children, we will not enter the kingdom of God (Matthew 18:3–4). Little children are not proud or greedy, but their hearts are still pure. A little child being weaned is totally dependent on the mother to give them their food and to care and provide for them.

We are called as believers to be like little weaned children—no longer content with drinking milk like infants, but like weaned children eating solid food for the spiritually mature (Hebrews 5:12–14). Apostle Paul used the metaphor of a child to describe the spiritual state of believers in Christ in his time, saying that some are still like infants, only able to drink milk and not solid food, which is for the spiritually mature (1 Corinthians 3:1–2).

As dearly loved children of God, saved by grace, we are called to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God (1 Peter 5:6). We are to endure and wait patiently for the Lord, rejoicing in our afflictions, praying unceasingly, and giving thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for us in Christ Jesus (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18, Romans 12:12).

We have such precious and great promises of God to look forward to in anticipation of the appearing of our Lord in the full glory of the Father (Titus 2:13). Therefore, let us abound in love and the good works that God has prepared for us when the foundation of the earth was laid, for we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to abound in good works (Ephesians 2:10).

Help us, Lord, not to grow weary of doing good (Galatians 6:9), but to be confident that we will receive a reward—the crown of glory being held up in heaven for us (1 Peter 5:4). Let us look forward to the glorious appearing of our Lord and Saviour in the full glory of the Father and the holy angels (Luke 9:26).

We pray that, like little children eating the solid food of Your words, we, by the fortifying Spirit, will humble ourselves under Your mighty hand (1 Peter 5:6) to work in obedience to our Lord’s commandment to love and be merciful to others as He has been merciful to us (Luke 6:36). Let us not judge others, for we will be judged with the same measure we judge others (Matthew 7:1–2).

Help us to persevere for a while, knowing that You Yourself will redeem us to Yourself at the proper, appointed, perfect time (1 Peter 5:10). Keep our focus on our Lord and Saviour, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), who has started a good work in us and will carry it to perfection on the day of His second coming in the glory of the Father (Philippians 1:6).
